Editor Training

Managing your platform from the Admin Dashboard

Introduction

Editor training will take you through the creation of an Entity. Along the way you’ll learn about User Lists, Application Forms and Power Ups.

Instructions

Follow the lessons in order.

Each lesson has a follow along component, where you can gradually build content for the platform. We recommend doing this to cement the learning, however if you do not have time you can simply watch the videos and come back to them in the future when you need to create content for your platform.

Each video has time stamps, which can be accessed in the video description or by hovering over the timeline.

Lesson 1. Concepts and Entities – Making Content from Templates

Length: 6 minutes

This training video covers the basic elements of creating content for the platform.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Understand what an Entity and a Concept are, and how these two items relate to each other
  • Be able to create new content for the platform, in the form of Events

Lesson 2. Power-Ups and User Lists

Length: 4 minutes

In this video you will learn about User Lists and how they can be used to track user interest in your Entities.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Make sure you have an Event Entity created from the Events Concept
  • If you are unsure of how to do this, follow the Concepts and Entities: Making content from templates video above

If you are following along, before beginning this training:

  • Know what a User List is, as well as how to create your own
  • Have the ability to control Power Ups on your Entities, and apply User Lists to them to create a new Join button for an Event Entity

Lesson 3. Memberships and Applications

Length: 9 minutes

Memberships and Applications covers the creation of a Group Entity, and the benefits of the Membership Power Up over using the simple Join button.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Be able to make Applications for your users to fill out
  • Understand how to control the various aspects of Memberships and their unique visibility permissions

If you are following along, before beginning this training:

  • Make a new Group Entity from the Group Concept called London Alumni
  • This is the same as creating an Event Entity, you simply click the small + icon beside Groups in the Admin Dashboard Concepts area instead of Events (if you are unsure of how to do this, rewatch the first video in this training course: Concepts and Entities: Making Content from Templates)
  • Make a new User List called London Alumni Members

Lesson 4. Dynamic User Lists and Auto-Subscribing Users to Memberships

Length: 5 minutes

In this video you will learn how to create Dynamic User Lists to automatically add users to a list based upon their data.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Know what a Dynamic User List is, as well as how to create your own
  • Be able to use a Dynamic User List to automatically add users to memberships in Entities such as Groups

If you are following along, before beginning this training:

  • Ensure you have completed the follow along steps the Memberships and Applications training above
  • If you have done so you will have a Group Entity called London Alumni with a Membership for London Alumni Members within it

Lesson 5. Making a Mentoring Programme Using Connections

Lesson 5 is split into multiple parts (don’t worry, each video is only a few minutes long). 

In it you will create a brand new mentoring programme from scratch, however the concepts learned can be applied to any Connection Programme you can conceive.

The lessons included are:

  • Before you begin
  • Creating connection services
  • Creating a new connection

Length: 2 minutes

This video will explain what a Connection is, and the user journey when making connections within them. It uses an example Mentoring Connection to show the different steps.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Know the steps a Mentor takes to sign up and set up their profile
  • Understand the full journey of a user making a Connection Relationship with another user

Length: 2 minutes

If you are following along creating the content alongside the videos, you will require several items created before you begin the next training video. The video for this lesson goes through them, however for your convenience, here is what you will need to have ready in text form:

  • 1. Make a new entity called Training Mentoring Programme, made from the Connection Programme Concept (if you have forgotten how to make Entities from Concepts, please see lesson 1)
  • The page you should select for this entity is eMentoring > Apply
  • 2. Add two memberships to your new entity, one called Mentor and one called Mentee
  • Give the Mentor membership the tag Mentor in it’s settings (the video for this lesson shows how to do this)
  • 3. Create an additional User List called Mentoring Relationship Training User List (if you have forgotten how to do this, please see lesson 2)
  • 4. Create a new Application called Mentoring Relationship Training Application (if you have forgotten how to do this, please see lesson 3 and add one question to it of your choosing)

By the end of this training you will:

  • Have everything ready to create your Connection Programme

Connection Services are the services users offer when becoming a connections leader, such as a mentor. A follower, such as a mentee, can then select from these services when applying.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Be able to create new connection services
  • Be able to adjust the settings of these services

Now that you have everything set up, you can create the Connection itself. This will allow users to connect to one another on your programme.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Set the custom controls for your Connection

Lesson 6. User Notifications

Lesson 6 is split into multiple parts

In it you will learn how to set up user email notifications.

These lessons are:

  • Setting up a notification
  • Notification admin controls
  • Broadcast notifications

Length: 30 seconds

There are two levels of notifications: Concept and Entity. Here we cover what these are, and how they can be used to control what is sent out to your users at a more granular level.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Understand the difference between Concept and Entity Level Notifications
  • Be able to create new Concept level notifications
  • Know how to override Concept level notifications on an entity by entity basis

Various administrator controls can be accessed for Notifications, this video covers how to adjust them and how each one can better help you manage your platform.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Be able to set the various admin controls for notifications
  • Adjust the default settings for emails sent out from the service

Broadcast Notifications let you mass message bespoke groups of users with a pre-made email template. This lesson will explain what each setting does in this extremely useful tool.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Be able to send a mass email to many users at once
  • Understand which users your email will reach, as well as exactly what will be sent out

Lesson 7. Email Template Builder

Lesson 7 is also split into two parts.

In this series of lessons you will be taught how to use the Email Template Builder.

These lessons include:

  • Creating a new email template
  • Email template sections

Length: 5 minutes

Email Templates allow you to store pre-created templates that can be sent to users either via the notification system, or the Broadcast Notification tool. Features such as automatically replacing text in your email  with user profile data can be tricky to understand at first, but after this lesson you should find it easy.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Be able to make a new email template
  • Know how to replace text with user data automatically, such as the user’s first name
  • Understand how to correctly preview your email template
  • Practice placing your new email template into the notifications system

Email Templates can be split into sections, with each section having its own rules dictating which users will see them when they receive the email.

By the end of this training you will:

  • Create an email with sections
  • Configure those sections to only be shown when certain users receive the email template
